Tents: Do's and Dont's

BEFORE USE:

Before pitching your tent please read all the instructions carefully. Practise pitching you tent, before the initial camping trip.

Check all parts are correct WITHIN 7/10 DAYS OF PURCHASE.

The seams on most synthetic tents require sealing. Many manufacturers include the sealant with a new tent. Should you need a sealant contact us for advice on which sealant to use. Note that most sealants require 48 hours to cure.

Taped seams do not require sealing. SEAL INSIDE ONLY.

A new cotton tent is not at best until it has thoroughly wet and dried out naturally. This is called 'weathering'. Do not use a silicone treatment on seams prior to weathering as this can prevent the fibres swelling to seal the seams.

Failure to dry your cotton tent could lead to shrinkage.

Once you have carried out a practise pitch, leave the tent up to allow it to be rained on or 'weathered'.

Obviously, different tent types are suitable for different extremes of terrain or weather conditions. This is reflected in the price and design, we will advise you which is the most suitable for your typical use.

PITCHING:

Properly maintained and pitched your tent should resist most weather conditions, but remember it is a folding, lightweight structure, and storm damage IS NOT covered by guarantee. Good insurance cover is recommended.

  • Select an area, which is as flat as possible, but avoid marshy, low lying ground, which could flood, under conditions of heavy rain.
  • Clear site of sticks, stones or anything which could damage the groundsheet.
  • Do not peg out the groundsheet too tightly.
  • A sheet of strong polyethylene beneath the groundsheet (especially light weight tents) will give added protection and will also keep it clean. Contact us for the best advice on this matter.
  • It is better not to pitch under trees. Besides dripping long after it has stopped raining, some trees may drip sticky sap on your tent, which may affect the proofing.
  • Make use of natural safe windbreaks, such as hedges and where possible face the tent door away from the prevailing wind.
  • Tent fabrics will be affected by exposure to ultra violet light and acid rain. Colour may change and fabric can become weakened. If extended use of the tent in these conditions is envisaged, then seek a site which is as shaded as possible.
  • To prevent breakage of fibreglass poles of dome tents, all pegging points and cord guys must me securely pegged down at all times. Please note broken poles and pegs will not be covered under your warranty.

GUYS, PEGS AND ZIPS:

  • Pitch your tent with zips closed.
  • Avoid treading on zips (especially wearing boots) and treat zips gently - do not force.
  • Keep zips clean, especially in sandy or muddy conditions.
  • Drive pegs in at an angle to the direction of pull to get the best grip in the ground. Peg in line with the direction of the seam.
  • Pegs situated at the base of the zips should be crossed over to take off any strain.
  • Rubber guy loops should be stretched sufficiently to tension the fabric without over stretching.

IN USE:

  • Site you tent to a minimum of 6m from the adjacent tents and awnings.
  • Do not place cooking, heating or lighting appliances near sides or roof of tent or near fabric.
  • Ensure tent is well ventilated, particularly when cooking as sources of heat and light, which depend on fossil fuels, emit carbon monoxide.
  • Keep the tent exit(s) clear.
  • Never allow children to play with or near lighted appliances.
  • Observe manufacturers instructions for these appliances.
  • It is recommended that you carry a tent repair kit and spare poles.
  • Condensation often occurs in synthetic and even cotton tents. Do not confuse this with leakage. Good ventilation will help reduce condensation.
  • The moisture from the air, from your cooking and from your breath can, under certain conditions, form beads or drops of water when it comes into contact with a cold surface.
  • Always ensure all items are not in contact with the sides of the tent and that nothing causes the inner and outer tent to touch.

STORAGE:

  • Before storing your tent, make sure that it is completely dry and all mud has been removed.
  • Tents are best stored open out in a dry well aired place. If this is not possible, air the tent on a dry day or indoors if necessary.
  • MILDEW affects the tent when it is stored in damp or wet conditions.
  • At the first sign of mildew dry out your tent completely, brush carefully and re-proof. Severe cases may need to be cut out and re-patched.
  • Dirt and stains can be removed either by brushing or by gently washing with cold clean water. NEVER use detergents.
  • Do not scrub - rinse well and dry thoroughly, re-proofing if necessary. Contact us for best advice on which reproofing agent to use.
